Has anyone else noticed how easy it is to confuse OneDrive sync with an actual backup?

I used to think that if OneDrive was synced to a local PC, my data was basically protected. But the more I looked into it, the less comfortable I became with that assumption. Sync is mainly about keeping files available across devices. If a file gets deleted, corrupted, encrypted by ransomware, or accidentally overwritten, that change can potentially sync everywhere too.

That got me looking at dedicated OneDrive backup options.

The main thing I wanted was a backup that was independent of the synced copy. Ideally, it should preserve the folder structure and allow me to restore data when needed, rather than simply maintaining another synchronized version.

I came across Shoviv OneDrive Backup while comparing different approaches. I haven't treated it as a magic solution, but I liked the idea of having a dedicated backup workflow instead of depending entirely on desktop sync. For larger environments, features such as scheduled backups, incremental processing, and selective restoration can be more practical than manually copying files around.

Another thing worth considering is retention. With sync, there's a temptation to assume that deleted files or older versions will always be available. That's not necessarily the same thing as having a properly planned backup with defined retention and recovery procedures.

For anyone managing important OneDrive data, I'd say it's worth separating the two concepts:

Sync = accessibility and collaboration.
Backup = recovery and data protection.

Curious how others are handling this. Are you relying on OneDrive sync, using Microsoft 365 retention features, or maintaining a separate backup of OneDrive data?
